At the end of an OIDC login, the control plane sends the session token to the client in the callback URL (?t=<token>). This change implements the design in docs/specs/issue-3626-login-code-exchange.md (phase 1 of its rollout): a client that sends a PKCE-style code challenge gets a short-lived, single-use handoff code instead, and exchanges it for the token over an API call. Existing clients keep working, because the legacy callback stays allowed by default.

What changed, by requirement

  • R-001, code instead of token. A login request with code_challenge and code_challenge_method=S256 and a callback is redirected to the callback with ?handoff=<code> and no token (parameter name per D-011).
  • R-002, bound, short-lived, single-use code. Codes expire 60 seconds after they are issued and are stored in a new login_handoffs table. The exchange marks the code used in one atomic update, then checks expiry, the verifier against the challenge, and the callback. Every failure returns the same 401 LOGIN_HANDOFF_INVALID error to the client. The server log records the reason: unknown code, expired, already used, wrong verifier, or wrong callback.
  • R-003, token only in the exchange response. New unauthenticated RPC AuthService/ExchangeHandoff, served over gRPC and gRPC-web only (D-013). It creates the session token at exchange time with the same lifetime as the legacy flow, and returns it only in the response body. No token is stored at rest.
  • R-004, legacy callback unchanged while allowed. A login with no code challenge keeps the ?t= callback. Each such delivery to an external callback is logged and counted in the chainloop_controlplane_auth_legacy_callback_deliveries_total metric.
  • R-005, CLI uses the exchange. When the control plane reports support, chainloop auth login sends a challenge and exchanges the handoff code. While the control plane reports that legacy is allowed, the CLI accepts a ?t= callback and prints a deprecation warning. When legacy is denied, the CLI rejects a ?t= callback. Against an older control plane, the CLI uses the legacy flow. Headless login does not change.
  • R-006, capability discovery. Infoz reports login_code_exchange_supported and login_legacy_callback_allowed.
  • R-007, operator switch. A new config setting auth.allow_legacy_login_callback (Helm: controlplane.auth.allowLegacyLoginCallback) controls the legacy callback. When it is not set, legacy is allowed (phase 1). When it is set to false, a login with a callback and no challenge fails with a message that tells the user to upgrade the client. The headless login and the same-origin download flow (D-008) are not affected.
  • R-008, relative-only post-login redirect. The login handler rejects a callback whose returnTo is not a path that starts with a single /. Absolute URLs, scheme-relative values, backslashes and control characters are rejected. The check runs at login start and again before the redirect. A callback with no scheme and no host must also be a single-slash path now, so a value like ////evil.example no longer passes as relative.

Implementation notes

  • The handoff code has 256 bits of entropy from crypto/rand (oauth2.GenerateVerifier). Only its SHA-256 hash is stored, and lookups use the hash.
  • The code challenge travels in a cookie next to the existing callback cookie during the OIDC redirect, with the same cookie flags. The OIDC callback handler reads it after the state check. A login started before the upgrade has no challenge cookie and is handled as a legacy login.
  • R-008 "same origin" is read as the origin of the callback URL: a relative returnTo always resolves against it. The existing callbackAllowed origin check of the callback itself is unchanged for absolute URLs.
  • A code challenge with no callback, or a method other than S256, is rejected at login start.
  • The exchange requires the exact callback URL the login was started with. A wrong verifier burns the code, so the code cannot be retried.
  • Exchange failures return a single error to the client. Malformed requests (for example empty fields) are still rejected by the request validation with an invalid-argument error, which does not depend on the state of any code. The request arguments of the exchange are masked in the request log.
  • The control plane has no rate limiting or request throttling for unauthenticated endpoints, so this change adds none. The code entropy, the single use, the burn on a wrong verifier and the 60-second lifetime are the protection against guessing.
  • Expired codes are deleted every 10 minutes by a background sweeper, following the pattern of the existing background jobs. A used code is inert and is deleted when it expires, at most 60 seconds after it was issued.
  • The legacy delivery counter uses the Prometheus default registry served on /metrics, like the existing counters. It counts only deliveries to an external callback, so the same-origin download flow (D-008) does not affect the measurement used for the phase 3 deletion.
  • The new table's indexes are created in the same migration as the table, without CONCURRENTLY, because the table is new and empty. This follows earlier migrations that create tables.
  • AuthService/ExchangeHandoff is added to the operations that skip the user authentication middleware, and to the authorization exemptions.
  • The login and OIDC callback handlers no longer write a second response after a redirect or after the token page. Before, every login logged http: superfluous response.WriteHeader call.

Differences from the spec

  • D-003, exchange endpoint. The spec planned an HTTP POST mapping next to the gRPC RPC. This PR drops it: the CLI uses gRPC and the web UI uses gRPC-web, so no client needs the route, and the unauthenticated surface stays smaller. The spec is amended in this PR with a new decision, D-013, and D-003 is struck through as superseded.

This pull request was opened by Maximus bot (Claude Code) on behalf of @migmartri, and the code was written with AI assistance (Claude Code).

Closes #3626

…lback setting

Add the AuthService ExchangeHandoff RPC with its HTTP POST mapping, the
login capability flags on the info endpoint, and the operator setting that
controls the legacy token callback.

Store single-use login handoff codes, hashed, with the user, the token
lifetime, the PKCE challenge and the callback. The exchange consumes the code
in one atomic update before it checks expiry, verifier and callback, and a
sweeper deletes used and expired codes.

…the token

A login that sends a S256 code challenge gets a single-use handoff code in
its callback instead of the session token. The new ExchangeHandoff RPC (also
POST /auth/exchange) trades the code, the verifier and the callback for the
token, with the same error for every failure and the reason in the server log.

A login without a challenge keeps the token callback, which is logged and
counted, and an operator can deny it. The info endpoint reports both
capabilities, and the login rejects a returnTo that is not a relative path.
Used and expired codes are deleted periodically.

When the control plane reports the code exchange, the login sends a S256
code challenge and exchanges the handoff code it receives for the session
token. A token callback is accepted with a deprecation warning while the
control plane allows it and rejected otherwise. Against an older control
plane the login keeps the token callback.

How to check:
1. For each file above, confirm the listed guards are still reached on every path this
change adds or modifies. A guard on the direct path but skipped on a sibling path is
a live bug, not a style issue.
2. Where a file names a removed construct instead of a guard, search for that construct:
past fixes here deleted it rather than guarding it, so any surviving use is a lead.
3. Where an invariant is enforced at other entry points, check that this change does not
   add one that skips it.
4. Verify before reporting. Trace attacker-controlled input to the sink, confirm the
guard is genuinely absent, and state a concrete exploit. Discard what you cannot
   exploit.
5. Do not stop at these files. The fix history shows where risk concentrates, not the
   only bugs that exist.
6. When the review is complete, post a comment on this pull request to acknowledge it.
State that you reviewed the change against the security context. If you found no
issues, say so. If you found issues, do not put exploit details in the comment.

A callback such as ////evil.example/cb parses with no host, so it passed as
a same-origin relative path and skipped the legacy setting, while browsers
resolve it off-origin. A relative callback must now be a single-slash path,
the same rule as returnTo.

We detected this is a high-risk PR and are running a free ultrareview. An ultrareview is a deeper, multi-pass review that catches hard-to-find bugs a standard review can miss. We'll post the findings when it completes.

This PR appears to change authentication, authorization, or input validation, where a missed bug can expose data or grant the wrong access, so a deeper multi-pass review is worth running.

Regression assessment

Reviewed the change from a compatibility standpoint. No functional regression found. Summary of the verified compatibility matrix:

Scenario Behavior Status
Old CLI → new CP (default config) Legacy ?t= callback still allowed (LegacyCallbackAllowed is true when unset) — phase 1 ✅ unchanged
New CLI → old CP New Infoz fields default to false (proto3), so the CLI sends no challenge and uses the legacy flow ✅ graceful fallback
Old CLI → new CP with allowLegacyLoginCallback=false Login rejected upfront with an actionable "upgrade your client" message ✅ fail-closed, explicit
Headless login (--skip-browser / remote session) Unchanged; the fallback also strips the challenge params so the CP does not reject a challenge without a callback (35e4a5d) ✅
Same-origin dashboard download flow Relative callback with no challenge still receives ?t=; not counted as a legacy delivery, so the phase-3 metric stays clean ✅
Frontend Sends no challenge → still gets the token on a relative callback; no frontend change needed in this phase ✅
Helm New optional controlplane.auth.allowLegacyLoginCallback key is hasKey-guarded; unset installs produce byte-identical config. The login.yaml fragment merges via the existing multi-file config-source pattern (allow_list.yaml precedent) ✅

Also verified as part of the review (security POV):

  • Handoff codes: 256-bit crypto/rand, only the SHA-256 hash stored, 60 s TTL, single-use via an atomic conditional UPDATE (concurrent exchanges cannot both mint tokens), burn on wrong verifier, constant-time S256 verification, uniform 401 LOGIN_HANDOFF_INVALID for every failure with reasons only in the server log.
  • The open-redirect invariant from the previous fix in auth.go holds on all paths (legacy, handoff, headless, same-origin): callbackAllowed is re-checked at the callback, returnTo is restricted to single-slash relative paths at login start and before redirect, and the multi-slash bypass (////evil.example/cb) is rejected (8107d909, covered by tests).
  • The unauthenticated AuthService/ExchangeHandoff is end-anchored in the skip regexp (no method-prefix confusion), is the only HTTP-mapped AuthService method, and request validation rejects empty/oversized fields without an oracle.

Two non-blocking notes:

  1. Chart version bump is a patch (1.466.0 → 1.466.1) for a new values key — a minor bump would match the convention.
  2. Targeted new tests were executed locally and pass (internal/oauth, internal/service handoff tests, pkg/biz handoff integration tests); full CI runs on the PR as usual.

The login and OIDC callback handlers redirected or rendered the token page
and then returned a response, so the handler wrapper wrote a second header
and net/http logged "superfluous response.WriteHeader call" on every login.
Return nil once the request is answered.

Nice work — this implements the issue-3626 design cleanly and the PKCE + single-use store is exactly right. One suggestion to tighten the surface, and one confirmation to record.

Suggestion: drop the HTTP POST /auth/exchange mapping

ExchangeHandoff is exposed both as the gRPC RPC and as an HTTP POST /auth/exchange (google.api.http option). I think the HTTP mapping can go away:

  • The only real consumers are the CLI (gRPC) and the web UI. The web UI is a browser client of the control plane over gRPC-web — the platform frontend already instantiates generated clients as new AuthServiceClientImpl(client.grpcClient) (see frontend/src/hooks/api/account.ts), and this PR already generates the frontend TS client for ExchangeHandoff in app/controlplane/api/gen/frontend/controlplane/v1/auth.ts.
  • So there is no plain-HTTP consumer. D-003's rationale ("other clients use HTTP") doesn't hold — the other client is gRPC-web.
  • The endpoint is unauthenticated (it relies entirely on the PKCE verifier + single-use code). Removing the HTTP route shrinks the public unauthenticated surface and removes a CORS preflight concern the web UI would otherwise introduce by calling cp.chainloop.dev cross-origin.

Keeping it gRPC-only keeps the surface minimal and matches how the web UI will actually call it. If you want to keep an HTTP fallback for a future non-gRPC client, that's fine too — just flag it as intentional so we know it's a forward-looking surface, not a current need.

Confirmation: the web UI uses gRPC-web, not HTTP

For the record, the intended web consumption of this exchange is the gRPC-web call to AuthService.ExchangeHandoff with { handoff, code_verifier, callback }, via the generated @pb/controlplane/v1/auth client. No new web-side API and no UC call is involved; the UC stays internal to the control plane.

Note: callback param is ?handoff=

Recording for downstream coordination: this implementation delivers the callback as ?handoff=<code> (per D-011), not ?code= as the spec PR text showed. That's actually the better outcome — it avoids any collision with the MCP callback's own code OIDC mode. The platform-side work (SAML, MCP bridge, frontend) will read ?handoff= to match.

I'll mirror these into the platform-side spec (PFM-7822) so the two plans stay aligned.

The CLI uses gRPC and the web UI uses gRPC-web, so nothing needs the plain
HTTP POST /auth/exchange route. Dropping it keeps the unauthenticated
surface of the control plane smaller.

Reviewed this change against the security context, and found no issues.

  • auth.go: callbackAllowed and returnToAllowed run at login and again in deliverLogin on the callback cookie, before every redirect. The headless path has no redirect.
  • grpc.go: ExchangeHandoff is the only RPC added to the unauthenticated skip list, anchored at the end of the operation name. Its arguments are masked in the request log (main.go).
  • biz.go, conf.proto: only wiring and one config flag. No token policies are touched and there is no outbound HTTP.
  • Handoff codes are random, stored as a hash, single-use (consumed atomically before the verifier check), bound to the S256 challenge and the callback, and expire after 60 seconds. Every exchange failure returns the same error.

Changes pushed after the review round: the OAuth handlers no longer write a second response header after a redirect (the superfluous response.WriteHeader log line), and ExchangeHandoff is gRPC-only now, as suggested in the review. The second one deviates from spec decision D-003, which planned an HTTP mapping. The spec should be amended in its own spec PR.

The exchange endpoint no longer has an HTTP mapping. D-013 supersedes the
HTTP part of D-003, which stays as written.
