fix(conn): tolerate high-latency, lossy links in job reconnect and health checks - #3551

Conversation
onConnectionUp created a single 5s context and reused it for every ReconnectJob call in a serial loop. The deadline covers the whole batch, so on a high-latency connection only the first few jobs complete before it elapses; every remaining job then fails simultaneously with "context deadline exceeded" and its block stays stalled until the user tears the connection down by hand. Observed on a Tailscale DERP-relayed link (~85ms RTT), where a single job reconnect costs 0.55-1.31s: [conn:...] connection became connected, reconnecting jobs ... successfully reconnected to job manager (x3, over ~5s) [job:...] error reconnecting: failed to get job: context deadline exceeded (x12, same ms) [conn:...] finished reconnecting jobs: 3/15 successful On a LAN each reconnect costs ~30-50ms, so the shared budget fits 100+ jobs and the bug is invisible. Give each reconnect its own timeout and run them with bounded concurrency, so recovery no longer depends on RTT or job count. …alth checks Each durable-session job reconnect is several round trips (reconnect -> socket connect -> job manager auth -> token verify back to wavesrv), but the RPCs were bounded at 5s and the route wait at 2s. On a ~300-700ms RTT path with packet loss (US client -> China server over Tailscale), TCP retransmits push a healthy reconnect past those budgets, so jobs were marked failed and sessions were lost: RemoteReconnectToJobManagerCommand failed: EC-TIME: timeout waiting for response (x330 in 2h) authenticate-jobmanager error ...: failed to verify job auth token (x121) finished reconnecting jobs: 4/49 successful The connection monitor also used fixed 1s/5s/10s thresholds, so the same link flapped between good/degraded/stalled every few seconds. - jobcontroller: remote job RPCs 5s -> 20s, route wait 2s -> 10s, per-job reconnect and auto-reconnect budget -> 60s - wshrpc: DefaultTimeoutMs 5s -> 15s - connmonitor: track a keepalive RTT EWMA and scale the degraded delay (max(2s, 4*rtt)) and stalled threshold (max(8s|15s, 10*rtt)) with it; low-latency links keep the original behaviour floors Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughJob reconnects now run concurrently, with a maximum of eight jobs in flight and a separate 60-second deadline for each job. Job-related RPC timeouts and the default RPC timeout increase. Connection monitoring records a smoothed keepalive RTT and uses RTT-scaled thresholds for stalled and degraded checks. Tests cover the threshold calculations and EWMA updates. Do not make connection-state reconciliation wait for the full reconnect batch.
If many jobs time out on a lossy link, wg.Wait() holds onConnectionUp until every batch finishes. With 49 jobs and eight in flight, 20-second RPC timeouts can delay the state update in reconcileConn by about 140 seconds. During that wait, a later down-state transition remains pending. Separate the job batch from connection-state reconciliation, and cancel outstanding reconnects when the connection goes down.

Bound the stalled threshold after an unusually slow keepalive.
If the first successful keepalive takes 20 seconds, updateRttEwma records 20,000 ms. This line then sets the stalled threshold to 200 seconds. If the connection stops responding afterward, the monitor can leave it unstalled for more than three minutes. Set a liveness ceiling or limit the effect of an outlier sample.

Keep processing monitor events during the degraded wait.
If the RTT estimate is 10 seconds, this wait lasts 40 seconds. During that time, keepAliveMonitor cannot process its five-second ticker or send a keepalive after user input. A connection that stops responding just after the input therefore receives no new probe for up to 40 seconds. Use a timer in the outer event loop so ticker events remain active during the wait.

Problem
#3485 fixes the shared 5s deadline in
onConnectionUp. Over a link with higher RTT and packet loss, an individual job reconnect still fails even with its own deadline, because the RPCs inside it have tight fixed budgets:RemoteReconnectToJobManagerCommand:Timeout: 50002*time.Secondauthenticatejobmanager→ verify round trip back to wavesrv usesDefaultTimeoutMs = 5000A single reconnect is several round trips (reconnect → socket connect → job manager auth → token verify back to wavesrv). At 300–700ms RTT, TCP retransmits after packet loss push a healthy reconnect past 5s, so the job is reported as failed even though the job manager is alive.
Separately,
ConnMonitoruses fixed thresholds: "degraded" fires if there is no activity within 1s of a keystroke, and "stalled" fires when a keepalive has been in flight for 5s while typing (10s otherwise). On a 300ms+ link this flips good → degraded → stalled every few seconds even though the connection is up.Reproduction

tailscale ping220–300ms; ICMP RTT avg 330–400ms, max ~740ms, with bursts of loss. About 50 durable jobs on the connection. Waveterm 0.14.5 with #3485 applied, over 2 hours:The connection health status went good/degraded/stalled every 1–10s for the whole period. Some durable blocks ended in
Durable Session (Ended, Exited). After this patch, on the same link (wavesrv on the Mac and wsh on the remote rebuilt from the v0.14.5 tag with this patch applied):
The 10 minutes after restart had no degraded/stalled transitions. The link happened to be calmer during that window (0% loss, ±25ms jitter), so the strongest evidence here is the reconnect result; the threshold change is meant for the lossy periods.

jobcontroller: new constsRemoteJobRpcTimeoutMs = 20000(used by the four remote job RPCs that hadTimeout: 5000) andReconnectRouteWaitTimeout = 10s. The per-job reconnect budget and the auto-reconnect budget go to 60s so they cover the inner calls.wshutil:DefaultTimeoutMs5000 → 15000. This is what the remote side's token-verify round trip uses. It only changes how long a call waits before giving up; successful calls are unaffected.connmonitor: track an EWMA of keepalive RTT and scale the thresholds with it:max(2s, 4 × rtt)max(8s while typing / 15s idle, 10 × rtt)On a LAN (rtt ≈ ms) the floors apply, and they are slightly more lenient than the old fixed values. The thresholds and the EWMA are pure functions (
