Summary

First PR of agent-written shader effects: an agent writes WGSL that defines fn effect(uv: vec2<f32>) -> vec4<f32>, and the compositor applies it as a full-frame pass in compose_frame. Preview and export therefore draw the same pixels. The design is in docs/shader-effects.md, and this PR is section L.1 of it.

This PR covers the compositor side. The document model, the agent tools and the UI come in the next PRs, and nothing reaches users yet.

  • Contract v1 (shader_fx.rs): the agent's code, then a generated FxParams struct (named, typed parameters at b3), then the prelude.
    • frame() reads the composed image.
    • ctx carries resolution, aspect, programme time, region progress, the pointer, the last four clicks, and the footage and camera rects, all in output uv.
    • fx_px converts 1080p pixels to output uv; fx_hash is a deterministic random number.
  • Validation walks naga's IR.
    • The one hard rule: every loop must be a for with literal bounds, at most 4096 iterations per pixel. A loop that breaks it is refused, with its line.
    • Cost is never a refusal. The same walk estimates it in frame() reads per pixel and reports an indicative tier.
  • The Windows pass.
    • Compilation never runs on the render thread: naga 24 → HLSL SM 5.0 → FXC, on a background thread.
    • Cache: keyed by contract, code and parameter layout; it keeps the 64 most recently used.
    • Three targets: image (under annotations and captions), text (on a transparent text layer), both (applied last). Lanes set the order within a target.
    • Blocking: the export waits for a pending compile. The live view skips the effect until it lands, then recomposes.
  • plan_cursor hands effects the pointer and the recent clicks, and the addon gains checkShaderEffect, which returns the error or the cost tier.
  • Metal and wgpu parse the effects but do not draw them yet; that is listed as a known gap in native-compositor.md.

naga stays at 24. From 25 on, its HLSL output declares samplers in a D3D12 heap, which FXC ps_5_0 rejects (X3721). A test guards this.

Type of change

  • Feature
  • Documentation

Release impact

  • No release note needed: nothing is reachable from the app until the document model and the tools land

Desktop impact

  • Windows
  • macOS: compiles only, no pass yet
  • Linux: compiles only, no pass yet

Testing

  • Rust: cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --lib passes 442 tests on Windows (RTX 4070 Ti). The new ones cover:
    • the contract, the parameter packer checked against naga's offsets, the loop rule, the cost walk and the tiers;
    • the pointer and the recent clicks;
    • GPU tests for the three targets, lane order, a color parameter, and a broken effect or an unknown contract leaving the frame untouched.
  • Calibration (shader_fx_tier_calibration, release): about 4 µs per frame() read at 1080p and 17 µs at 4K. A light effect costs at most 0.06 ms per 1080p frame. Recorded in rendering-performance.md.
  • The Windows spike before this PR:
    • export of 180 frames: 520 ms without an effect, 523 ms with one;
    • the preview held the source's 30 fps;
    • preview and export frames agreed within H.264 noise.
  • Not run locally: macOS and Linux. CI covers them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for custom shader effects in scenes on Windows. Effects can target the image, text, or both, and can use frame, time, pointer, and parameter inputs.
    • Added shader-effect checking that reports validation errors, estimated cost tier, frame reads, and loop iterations.
    • Effects compile in the background during live preview; pending effects are skipped until ready. Export waits for compilation.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on shader-effect setup, supported targets, cost estimates, and loop limits.
  • Platform Support
    • Shader effects are not rendered on Metal or wgpu.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add WGSL shader effects to scene data, validate and analyze their code, and compile and render them on Windows. They also expose a shader-check API and add specifications and performance measurements.

Changes: Shader effects

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scene effect data and frame inputs
crates/compositor/src/scene.rs, crates/compositor/src/frame_geometry.rs, docs/shader-effects.md
Scene data now supports shader effects with timing, targets, lanes, contracts, parameters, and values. Cursor plans provide pointer coordinates and recent click positions.
WGSL analysis and validation
crates/compositor/src/shader_fx.rs, crates/compositor/Cargo.toml, crates/compositor/src/lib.rs, crates/compositor-view-napi/src/lib.rs, electron/native/compositor-view/addon.d.ts, docs/shader-effects.md
The shader module parses WGSL, checks its entry point and parameter names, estimates texture reads and loop work, and rejects unsupported loops and work above 4,096 iterations per pixel. The N-API exposes validation errors and cost metrics.
Windows compilation and render integration
crates/Cargo.toml, crates/compositor/src/compositor_windows.rs, crates/compositor/src/shader_fx.rs, crates/compositor/src/live.rs, technical-documentation/architecture/*, technical-documentation/engineering/rendering-performance.md, docs/shader-effects.md
The Windows compositor compiles effects asynchronously and caches up to 64 entries. It applies effects to image, text, or combined targets. Live rendering skips pending effects and recomposes paused frames after compilation completes. The documentation records platform support and performance measurements.
Timeline and inspector specification
docs/shader-effects.md
The specification describes timeline lanes, effect pills, inspector controls, safety constraints, test coverage, and staged work.

The shader effects are Windows-only and not yet reachable from the app. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains, and the cache-eviction edge case is minor.

941-962: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Do not evict the effect that this call just used.

shader_fx_entry first sets used = tick on the current key and then evicts the minimum used. That order protects the current key. In one frame, however, every active effect is touched in turn. If the scene holds more than 64 distinct sources, set_scene will evict entries that it inserted earlier in the same loop. Their compiles are then lost, and each frame starts them again. In blocking export, this means one new thread and one blocking compile per frame for each evicted effect.

Protect the entries touched in the current scene or frame from eviction, as lru_evictions does for img_cache.
