feat: shader effects integration (#1199, #1202, #1207) - #1210

Conversation
The full design after the Windows spike: the document model (definitions and clip-anchored regions), the WGSL contract v1 (named params, region progress, last clicks, footage and camera rects, deterministic hash), indicative cost tiers instead of budgets, the three targets (image, text, both), the DSL tools and what agents read back, rendering per platform, the UI, SSOT and safety, tests and the PR breakdown.
Agent-written WGSL effects (docs/shader-effects.md), the compositor half: the contract, its validation and the D3D11 pass. The document model and the agent tools come next. - shader_fx.rs: contract v1. The agent's code, then a generated FxParams struct (named, typed parameters at b3), then the prelude: frame(), ctx (resolution, aspect, programme time, region progress, pointer, the last four clicks, footage and camera rects in output uv), fx_px, fx_hash. - Validation walks naga's IR: every loop is a `for` with literal bounds, at most 4096 iterations per pixel, refused otherwise with its line. The same walk estimates the cost in frame() reads per pixel, as an indicative tier; nothing is refused on cost. - Windows: effects compile off the render thread (naga 24 -> HLSL SM 5.0 -> FXC), cached by contract, code and parameter layout, 64 kept. Three targets: image (before annotations and captions), text (on a transparent text layer drawn over the image), both (last); lanes order them. The export waits for a compile, the live view skips and then recomposes. - plan_cursor hands effects the pointer and the recent clicks; the napi addon gains checkShaderEffect (error, tier, reads, iterations). Calibrated on an RTX 4070 Ti: about 4 us per frame() read at 1080p and 17 us at 4K; a light effect costs at most 0.06 ms per 1080p frame. Metal and wgpu parse the effects but do not draw them yet.
Agent-written shader effects (docs/shader-effects.md), the document half: where an effect lives, how agents write and re-read it, and what the compositor receives. Stacked on the contract v1 PR. - Schema: `shaderEffects` (definitions: WGSL code, name, description, contract, declared params, cached cost) and `shaderEffectRanges` (clip-anchored regions with their values, target and lane). Optional, like `vocabulary`: a document without effects carries neither key. - `RegionKind` gains "shaderEffect" through the whole modifier pipeline, so an effect moves, trims and goes with its clip. A definition goes with its last region. - Tools: addEffect (writes and poses, or reuses by effectId), setEffect, setEffectDefinition, getEffect; removeModifier removes a region. The compositor checks the code first (checkShaderEffect, wired for the MCP server and the in-app agent); a compile error comes back at the agent's line. Results give the cost tier and a recommendation when a tier runs long, never a refusal. One lane holds no overlap. - getCurrentDocument lists effects and definitions without their code. - The scene gets each fragment with its definition, normalised values and the whole pill's span on the programme clock, so `ctx.region` runs across a cut. - MCP: the resource openscreen://effects/contract holds the full contract and two examples; a test keeps it in step with the prelude and a Rust test compiles its examples. - `openscreen info` counts effects; a workbench scenario (ripple on click) and document invariants for effects; the demo skill and the architecture docs say how it works.
The wgpu compositor now draws agent-written effects, as the Windows one does: same targets (image, text layer, both), same lanes, same blocking rule (the export waits for the pipeline, the live view skips it until it lands). - The WGSL goes to wgpu as it is. A background thread builds the module and the pipeline against an explicit layout of the prelude's four bindings. - wgpu panics on a validation error: `analyze` now also refuses any binding the prelude does not declare, so nothing invalid reaches it. - `check_for_agent` translates the effect to SPIR-V on Linux. - live.rs turns the preview's non-blocking mode on for Linux too. Tested on lavapipe under WSL: the six GPU tests of the Windows pass, ported, and the full compositor suite. Tier calibration on lavapipe goes to rendering-performance.md and the spec (C.7, H.2).

the loop being analyzed, rather than scanning the entire parent block; identify

fx_to_footage and fx_from_footage map between output uv and the recording's own plane through the warp the compositor draws it with: bilinear under a fixed angle, the corners' homography under the real 3D camera. ctx.footage_aspect gives round distances on that plane. The effect picks its space; the contract does not decide for it.

- A loop's counter starts from its value at THAT loop: the last store before it in its block, else its initialiser. Any other write to the counter (another block, after the loop, through a pointer) is refused, so the safety ceiling can never under-count trips. - The compiled-effect cache never evicts an effect the current scene shows (Windows and Linux). - setEffect clamps a moved pill against its own lane only, the one the overlap check used. - checkShaderEffect returns null (not checked) when the addon throws. - Workbench: shaderEffect is an EditFamily, and the ripple scenario only counts ranges of an effect that reads ctx.clicks. - Docs: checkShaderEffect in the spec, effects in ai-agent.md's removeModifier and time-base lines.
integration/shader-effects collects the shader effects PRs before they go to main, and nothing checked them: ci.yml triggered on main, feat/ai-edition and release/** only. Those PRs change native code for Windows, macOS and Linux, and each author can build one of the three.

Agent-written WGSL effects (docs/shader-effects.md) now draw on macOS, in preview and export alike. With the Windows and Linux passes, every backend draws them. - shader_fx.rs: naga 24 to MSL with the prelude's bindings mapped explicitly (texture 0, an inline constexpr sampler, ctx and params at buffers 2 and 3), so naga never invents a binding. Compiled with new_library_with_source and a Replace pipeline state on a background thread, under its own autorelease pool. checkShaderEffect compiles for Metal too: accepted means it will draw. - naga's force_loop_bounding is off: the validation already proved every loop bounded, and its volatile guard cost 7 to 10 % of the pass. - compositor_macos.rs: the same cache, blocking and lane order as the other passes. Each pass blits its target into ann_copy in the frame's command buffer, then repaints it in a pass that loads the target. draw_annotations takes the texture it draws on, which is how the text layer gets the annotations for `text` effects. - live.rs: every backend draws effects now, so the live view's non-blocking mode and its recompose-on-landing lose their cfg. - msl-out is declared for macOS instead of arriving through wgpu. Tests on the Metal device: the six GPU tests of the Windows pass, plus a real annotation that an `image` effect leaves alone and a `text` effect repaints, and the spec's ripple and the two MCP examples compiling. Measured on an M1: about 0.12 ms per frame() read at 1080p and 0.5 ms at 4K, thirty times the RTX 4070 Ti; a new source compiles in 120 ms (up to 375 ms for the first in a process). An agent's addEffect took 152 ms through the mcp CLI; preview and export agree within codec noise; export time and preview frame rate do not change.
Same two lines as the Windows and Linux passes (#1213): the footage quad and its aspect, so fx_to_footage works under Metal too.
… the footage plane Two things from the review of integration/shader-effects (#1213 and the review fix) that the Metal pass did not have yet. - The compiled-effect cache never evicts an effect the current scene shows (shader_fx::eviction_victim), as on Windows and Linux: set_scene installs the scene before it starts the compiles. - The Windows GPU test of fx_to_footage and fx_from_footage, ported to the Metal device: the footage plane maps back to what the compositor drew, flat, under a fixed angle (bilinear) and under the real camera (homography). It also checks their MSL translation.
…clicks Effects read ctx.cursor and ctx.clicks from plan_cursor, which returns None when the cursor is not drawn: with Show cursor off, or during auto-hide, a ripple on click never fired and an effect following the mouse lost it, in preview and export, on every backend. - frame_geometry: effect_pointer places the pointer and the last clicks as plan_cursor places the cursor (a shared CursorPlacer), whether or not the cursor is drawn. ctx.cursor.z is 0 only when the recording hid the pointer or a zoom leaves it out of frame; earlier clicks stay. CursorPlan drops the two fields only effects read. - The three backends build one CursorPlanInput for the cursor and the effects, and compute the effect pointer only for a scene with effects. - Tests: the geometry with the cursor shown, hidden by the user and hidden by the recording; on the Metal device (and its D3D11 and wgpu mirrors), an effect that paints ctx.cursor.z and ctx.clicks[0].w sees both under a hidden cursor, and saw neither before the fix. - Spec C.2 and native-compositor.md say what a hidden cursor hands an effect.
…the tiers on an M1 A Metal compile takes 120 ms for a new source on an M1, up to 375 ms for the first in a process (#1206), against 10 ms for FXC. checkShaderEffect ran it on the main process's thread. - The addon's checkShaderEffect is an AsyncTask on the libuv pool, like segmentFrame. The service and the checker type return a promise; the service awaits it inside its try, so a rejecting addon still reads as "not checked", as a throwing one did. - runDocumentTool asks first, for the code addEffect or setEffectDefinition will store (shaderEffectToCheck), then hands the answer to the executor, which stays synchronous, as the cursor read and the auto-zoom plan already do. Edits off: nothing is asked. - addEffect's description and the MCP contract resource give each tier in ms on the RTX 4070 Ti and on the M1, as the spec's C.7 asks.

The `inactive` reasons are read back. Also tested: `addAnnotation` for a 72 px text and a mosaic blur. **Export:** `exportVideo` at `fps: 30` gives 1920×1080 at 30 fps, 1472 frames for 49.07 s. The frames at 5 and 35 s show the blur, the webcam cut-out top-right, the title and the French captions. `gifLoop` on an `.mp4` is refused. **Open in the editor:** `listProjects` reports `open: true`. `addZoom` and a wallpaper change land live, and each comes off with one Ctrl+Z. `restoreCheckpoint` resets the take live, and one Ctrl+Z brings every edit back. **App quit and relaunch:** one client session spans an app quit and a relaunch. With the app gone, an edit asks for a checkpoint and lands in the file after `createCheckpoint`. Once the app is relaunched and the project reopened, the same session's edit shows live, with no client restart. **Other tools:** `setProjectInfo`, `duplicateClip`, a clip `cropRegion`, `addAutoZooms` (0 new, telemetry reported per asset) and `importMedia` of an MP3 work. `removeMedia` refuses an asset still on the timeline and names its clips, and `createProject` from a video returns a checkpoint. **CLI:** `Openscreen.exe captions <project> --max-words 5` writes a 40-word transcript, turns captions on, and leaves no `auto-caption` annotation. **Defect 1 (P1): every GIF export over MCP fails.** It fails with the app running and without it: `exportVideo` to `.gif` → "--quality is only supported for MP4 exports", because `electron/mcp/media-tools.ts` always sends `quality: "good"` and the export runner refuses a quality on a GIF. **Defect 2 (P2): the recording bar loses always-on-top** after the source picker or the language prompt closes. Its window style goes from `0x280028` to `0x200000` and it sinks behind other windows; Ctrl+Shift+O brings it forward, still not topmost. **Minor:** `camera: true` picks the first listed camera, a virtual "VCam Camera" here, which wrote a 0-byte webcam file that the take dropped without a word. The language prompt shows on every launch, the #1145 symptom: ten older dev `mcp` servers from another worktree still hold the profile. The first two MCP takes had silent system audio (−91 dB) although the narration played; a take from the bar and three later MCP takes, with and without StreamCam, all had it (−3 dB), so this is not attributed. Not run: the in-app HTTP server, because copying its access token is refused to the agent; the microphone, with no working input on this machine; everything outside the MCP section. | | ||

A zoom and a wallpaper change land live, and each comes off with one Ctrl+Z. **One client session across an app quit and relaunch:** with the app gone, an edit asks for a checkpoint and lands in the file after `createCheckpoint`. Back in the reopened editor, the next edit shows live. **Media, clips, checkpoints:** `importMedia` of an MP4 and an MP3, `insertClip`, `addAudio` with a fade, `duplicateClip`, a clip `cropRegion` and `setProjectInfo` work. `removeMedia` refuses an asset still on the timeline. `restoreCheckpoint` on the open project resets it, and one Ctrl+Z brings every edit back. **Without the app:** `createProject` from a video returns a checkpoint, and `Openscreen.exe captions` writes a 40-word transcript with captions on and no `auto-caption` annotation. Correct the test-coverage claim for real captions.
The cited Metal test uses a figure annotation, not a caption. It does not cover a text-target effect over a real caption. State that the real-caption check was not run and that the test covers annotation routing. The supplied compositor test uses a figure annotation.

nv12_frame left the AVFrame's width and height at zero, so the footage planned from it had no width. Nothing placed in it could land: a_hidden_cursor_still_hands_the_effect_its_pointer_and_clicks saw neither the pointer nor the click and failed on every Windows run. Windows CI only runs cargo check, which is why it went unseen.
…current Without an export, or with one the project changed after, getFrames now renders the frames from the project instead of asking for an export (docs/shader-effects.md, E.4). - The compositor: timeline_walk::render_frames composes only the asked output frames, through the export's own walk. The skipped frames are neither decoded nor composed; a decoder left more than 2 s behind catches up from a keyframe, stepping back until it lands at or before the target, so the source frame shown is the export's. - The addon: renderFrames builds the compositor as exportMulti does (one shared export_cfg_and_scene, one clip_sources) and returns JPEGs at most 1280 px wide. - MCP: getFrames builds the clips and the scene as the export does (buildNativeClipList, now shared with openscreen export), maps ruler seconds to frames on exportVideo's 60 fps grid, and says why it rendered. - tests/render_frames_match_export.rs proves a frame rendered alone is byte-identical to the full walk's, on a source whose every frame differs and a grid between its frames; a seek straight to the target fails it. Run on Windows and on lavapipe.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy liftKeep non-text annotations out of the text-effect layer.
When a frame has an image or figure annotation,
draw_annotations(..., false)draws it onto this layer. AShaderEffectTarget::Textpass then changes that annotation, although the target is text-only. Separate text from other annotations before applying text effects, and preserve theirzIndexorder when composing the result. The target test at Lines 4084–4099 has no annotations, so it does not cover this case.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Map times over the clips sent to the renderer.
If a timeline clip has no resolvable asset path, buildNativeClipList omits it, but programmeSecOf(document, sec) still counts it. A request after that clip can select the wrong frame of a later clip, or an index beyond the rendered timeline. Build the time map from the same resolvable clips used for the native render request.

Report a requested frame that the renderer did not return.
If the native timeline ends before a requested index, byIndex.get(indices[i]) is empty. This branch then returns success and reports that the frame was rendered, but supplies no image. Return a tool error or identify the missing frame in the result.

An effect is written to measure for what the user asked: two looks at the same moment go in one shader rather than stacking. The lanes 0-7 of the first PRs are gone from the document, the tools and the compositor (docs/shader-effects.md, K.6). - Schema and scene: no lane field; an older document's lane is stripped on load. - Agent tools: addEffect and setEffect lose lane and refuse any overlap, saying to combine looks in one shader. setEffect clamps against every effect again. The cost report drops the busiest-moment tier, which an effect alone makes redundant. - Compositor: active_effects keeps the scene's order (a hand-written scene that overlaps still renders); the lane-order tests go, and the three-targets test uses one effect per case. - MCP contract, agent descriptions, spec and docs follow.
One Effects lane under Full Camera, shown only while the project has an effect. Its pills move, resize, copy, paste and delete like the other regions, and a paste onto another effect is refused. The inspector edits the effect's parameters and target, shows its cost tier and its code, and reports a compile error the compositor finds.
